G. Dep Speaks From Rikers

Rapper G.Dep is currently incarcerated in Rikers Island in New York City, awaiting transfer. G. Dep was convicted of murder last week after turning himself in late 2010 for shooting a man in 1993. Dep explained to the New York Post that he felt he did the responsible thing when he walked into that precinct and issued his confession.

"Maybe at the end of serving time or after looking back, someone might feel differently," G. Dep said. "But now I feel what I did was right."

The rapper's wife originally was against his turning himself in, but has come to grips with his decision. And Dep also said that he hopes that his children will understand why he did what he did as they get older.

G. Dep Responds To Conviction

Rapper G. Dep was convicted for 1993 murder of John Henkel this week, but the former Bad Boy Records star seemed to have made his peace with the decision. G. Dep spoke with MTV about the conviction and said that he holds no negativity regarding how things have played out.

He felt that this was how things were meant to be.

"However it went down, it was just one of them things where I knew I was facing some type of charge, so whatever the verdict was, I knew it was God's will," he said. "Someone was taken from [the Henkel] family, so I can't feel like I was robbed in any kind of way," he said. "I just want to thank everyone that was involved in the case. I don't have no ill thoughts towards anybody."

"I'ma just stay strong and hopefully I'll see y'all in the near future or the far future," he added. "I know life goes on, praise God. And one day maybe I could say hello to y'all again."

G. Dep Case Takes Twist

Former Bad Boy rapper G. Dep, born Trevell Coleman, is now claiming that the authorities have linked him to the wrong victim. This is despite the fact that Coleman turned himself in back in 2010 for the 1993 shooting of a man in Harlem. The man subsequently died, and Coleman was charged with murder.

Now his legal representation are saying that John Henkel, the man whom Coleman is charged with killing, is not the individual that was shot in 1993. But prosecutors believe the victim is a match.

"There are no other homicides even close to fitting the description," prosecutor David Drucker told potential jurors.

G. Dep faces 15 years in prison.

G. Dep Jury Selection Begins

Jury selection begins today (April 9th) in the murder trial for former Bad Boy Records rapper G. Dep. In December 2010, Dep confessed to shooting a stranger while robbing him back in 1993. The man subsequently died, and Dep, born Trevell Coleman, now faces murder charges.

He turned down a previously-offered plea deal. He now faces 25 years to life if he's convicted.

“Conscience drove him to do something. … He thinks he did the right thing,” his defense lawyer Anthony L. Ricco previously said. “There’s a lot of people who think he’s a fool for doing this. He doesn’t think he’s a fool. […] He says this has been like a blessing. It’s saved his life.” G. Dep faces 25 years to life behind bars if convicted. He is currently being held without bail and has pleaded not guilty.
