Gabrielle Union Addresses "Man Down"

Gabrielle Union Addresses ''Man Down''
Actress Gabrielle Union has spoken candidly about being raped as a teen. The beauty decided to add her perspective to the ongoing controversy surrounding Rihanna's "Man Down" video. In the video, Rihanna shoots a man who sexually assaulted her. Union decided to advise anyone going through a similar situation to take a different path.
“Saw “Man Down” by Rihanna. Every victim/survivor of rape is unique, including how they THINK they’d like justice [to] be handed out," Union shared. "[During] my rape I tried [to] shoot my rapist, but I missed. Over the years I realized that killing my rapist would’ve added insult to injury. The DESIRE [to] kill someone who abused/raped [you] is understandable, [but] unless it’s self defense in the moment to save your life, just ADDS to your troubles #mandown. I repeat SELF DEFENSE 2 save yourself/protect yourself, I’m ALL for. Otherwise victim/survivor taking justice into your own hands with violence equals more trouble for you!!”

and i agree Gab. ur absolutely right, after u kill ur rapist then what? it was a good video but like noticed ur sending a bad message out to those that have went through a similar problem as of Rihanna's video "mandown" i cant knock it to much though b/c i do like the song but it still sends a negative vibe to the women that arent so strong!

I just released my book sharing similiar situation. Ladies never take it into your own hands, call for and get help. I am always behind Ms Union, a true fan, so glad she is speaking out against image of violent reaction when being sexually violated. There is help and a better way.

What? Did Gabrielle or anyone commenting actually LISTENED to the song instead of just watching and tuning it out??? Rihanna OBVIOUSLY showed regret through the lyrics. She said if she could take it back she would and would not have acted in haste. Wow people dont listen to lyrics at all before commenting.

That was well said.... We all know in that specific mindset that would be the victim's initial reaction, but not a good decision in the long run! God bless victim's of sexual assault, domestic violence, etc.

no one deserves to be abused its a horrible feeling to be violated....killing isnt the answer but how do tell that to those who will never get justice for violent acts against them?

I Agree You Shouldn't Take Justice Into Your Own Hands. But... That Doesn't Prevent Men From Standing Up And Bringing Those Who Cross That Line To Justice Themselves.

No Man Should Feel Safe Among Real Men After Doing Something This Evil, Or Even Thinking About It. Men Should Have Fear Of Death Put Into Their Minds From The Community Of Men They're Surrounded By.

That We Men Don't Stand Together Against These Weak Beast Among Us Is The Problem. I Would Spend The Rest Of My Life In Prison Removing These Monster From Victimizing Any Women Of This Evil Act... And The Cowards Should Know That Out Loud.

To The Fools Who Keep Making This Music Of Evil That Inspires The De-Valuing Of Women.... Be Afraid Of Retribution From Real Men, Be Very Afraid!

I do agree with Gabrielle....

but, did anyone listen to the lyrics in this song? The entire song is regret for what she's done. She knows it wasn't right, she can't sleep, didn't mean to hurt him, too late to turn back, now she's a criminal.

It just sounds to me like she's identifying with the feeling of wanting to harm an attacker, but also showing that the aftermath can be worse.

@ Phoxie....pay attention.first of all LISTEN not LISTENED. Never did she say the song was conpletely wrong. She is merely commenting on the actions carried out in the vid. I'm glad yuu know the lyrics, but many young girls out the would just watch the vid and follow in her footsteps. She isn't judging rihanna...she is just commenting.

Rihanna's 'Man down' video creatively handles the sensitive issues of rape, justice, remorse and healing. She clearly addresses her remorse at the shooting and she has every right to express what many feel should happen to rapists.I support her video, artistic licence and willingness to deal rape.Empowered women do great things.I salute her on this one.I absolutely agree with how she handled it.
