Too $hort Recalls Working With Dr. Dre

Too $hort reminisced about working with fellow West Coast legend Dr. Dre. In a recent interview with VIBE, $hort recalled sharing time with the legendary producer as the two worked on a track for Dre's long-awaited Detox project.
"[Dr. Dre] had this song it was called 'Man’s Best Friend' - aka 'P***y' - and from what I understood he kept getting people to rap on it,” explained Too Short. “And Dre is a perfectionist. He didn’t like what they were doing on it and he didn’t plan on using it."
"Then somebody suggested my name, so he called me in. I’m not even gonna lie to you, the rap that I did for Dr. Dre, I didn’t write the rap," $hort says. "Kurupt’s little brother wrote it - Roscoe - and he pimped me one hell of a sixteen-bar verse. Dre had me in there, the first session was nine hours."
"You know how cool Dre is? This is how cool Dr. Dre is—he asked his people, ‘how much does Short want for the verse?’" $hort shared. "And when I said what I wanted his response was, ‘Pay him double.’ That was the homie. I had never had anyone get at me like that."

Biggie Confronted Too $hort Over Lil Kim?

Rapper Too $hort shared the story of his first, somewhat-tense meeting with the Notorious B.I.G. $hort says that Biggie was very protective of his protege Lil Kim, who the $hort Dog was looking to record with.
"I paid for the tickets for Kim and her manager to come to Atlanta," $hort told RapFix. "And I went to pick them up to take them to the studio and who gets off the plane? No Lil' Kim, it was Biggie." Apparently, Biggie wanted to make sure the Oakland rapper's intentions were positive. "So what's goin' on with you and Kim? What's happenin'?" Too $hort remembered Biggie asking.
"He wanted to know what was goin' on with his little thang before he let it happen," $hort said. "So I explained it to him... and sure enough she showed up on the next flight. We got in the lab and we worked it out."
$hort says that even though he and Kim were two of the raunchiest rappers in hip hop, their collaboration "Call Me" didn't meet fans' expectations. "Believe it or not, we did the song and everybody said, 'Man, it's not dirty enough,' " $hort laughed.

Too $hort Benefit Concert Halted

Too $hort Benefit Concert Halted
Too $hort and several other rappers were scheduled to take part in a benefit tonight (September 2) at a San Francisco club called Space 550 to benefit Juliana Pena, a 2 year-old girl diagnosed with advanced neuroblastoma. But a contract dispute has put the benefit in jeopardy and the club closed unexpectedly for renovations. Reps for the club say that the show was booked without the owners' consent or approval.
The concert's organizer, Cochise Thomas, is reportedly planning to sue over the mishap. Meanwhile, the benefit was to help Pena raise money to undergo a stem cell transplant and receive intense chemotherapy.
"When [Thomas'] back is against the wall, he is still trying to do everything he can to make this happen," her father, Jesus Peña said. "He's just trying to give more awareness. He wants to still do this to let people know what we're going through."

2Pac Honored In Atlanta

2Pac Honored In Atlanta
On what would've been the 40th anniversary of the late rapper Tupac Shakur, several celebrities and artists gathered at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center in Stone Mountain, GA to pay tribute to the fallen rapper/actor, who was shot and later died in September 1996.
Meek Mill, Bun B, Warren G, Too Short, jazz singer/producer Roy Ayers, Rick Ross and Erykah Badu were among those in attendance. The event was hosted by Mike Epps.
"For a lot of lil' dudes in a single parent home [like me] with my mother, Tupac played father for a lot of dudes like me," Rick Ross said to the crowd. "Tupac was the first one that showed me how to be fully committed. I took [aspects of him like] his [loyalty], to his hard work, his ethic, his family with me. When we talk about his record sales, let's not forget the role he played to all the little Black boys around the world."
"My first reaction to Tupac was he's not a rapper, he's not an actor, he's a savior of sorts. But he came at a time when people weren't looking for a savior, they were looking for someone who looked like them," she said. "But saviors, sometimes are just doing the work, they are just doing their job."
